John William (J. W.) Stewart, CMSGT, Retired United States Air Force Reserves, passed away
September 10, 2025. He was born July 5, 1931, in Cleburne County, Alabama, to Lillie Adell
Baggett Stewart and Roy Felton Stewart. John attended Bowdon High School, Bowdon, Georgia,
and Kennesaw State College, Kennesaw, Georgia.
As a 17-year-old, he quit school in the eleventh grade. On September 23, 1948, John enlisted in
the United States Air Force and completed Basic Training at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita
Falls, Texas. After basic training, he was stationed in Tokyo, Japan, from January,1949, through
December, 1951. He was then transferred to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio,
until May, 1952. In May, 1952, John was stationed at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta,
Georgia, through November, 1953, at which time he was honorably discharged from the Air
Force.
On July 4, 1952, in Mt. Zion, Georgia, John married JoAnne Smith, daughter of Olin and Lillian
Smith of Bowdon, Georgia.
In 1954, John enlisted in the Air Force Reserves and, also, began a career in the US Civil
Service. He remained at Dobbins Air Force Base until he retired from the Civil Service in May,
1987, and the US Air Force Reserves in July, 1991, at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.
In February, 1964, John and JoAnne settled in Marietta, Georgia, with their daughter Gail and
son Johnny. They began attending Welcome All Baptist Church in Smyrna, Georgia, and on
September 11, 1966, he was ordained as a deacon. He is currently a member of Westridge
Church in Dallas, Georgia.
John is preceded in death by his wife, Joanne Stewart; his son John William Stewart, Jr.(Johnny);
his parents, Roy Felton Stewart and Lillie Adell Baggett Stewart; his brother, Thomas Jefferson
Stewart; and his sister, Joann Stewart Rogers.
John is survived by his daughter, Gail Davis of Powder Springs, GA; grandchildren: Jeff, Jr.
(Carrie) Davis, Rockmart, GA; Josh (Katie) Davis, Blairsville, GA; Jarrett (Brittany) Davis,
Dallas, GA: and Great Grandchildren, Evyn Davis and Arlee Davis, Blairsville, GA; Coy Davis
and Corban Davis, Dallas, GA; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 12, 2025 at 12:00 pm from the Chapel of Bellamy Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Friday from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place at 3:00 pm Friday at Indian Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Bowdon, GA.
